Can it be fixed? Is the laser burning out, it has been used a fair amount. Some discs still work but old and new discs (in fine condition) fail to load. Either the browser wont recognise there's a disc in, or it says it's an incorrect format. I've tried cleaning the vents but as yet I've refrained from opening it up. It's well past the warranty so i suppose I wouldn't be losing anything if I did. Advice?

I'd give that web article on cleaning out the PS2 and adjusting the laser height first, otherwise I've seen PS2 laser assemblies for sale on eBay for about £50, just depends if it's worth that to keep your old machine going or £100 for a new slimline.

Phone the sony playstation helpline and tell them what the problem is, they usually end up offering you a reconditioned playstation for £55 and you have to give them your old one aswell.

Have you tried running a cleaning disk in it? The type that has a small brush on it to clean the "eye"?

You could try this (see link below). It worked on ours, although it only kept it going for another year or so... better than nothing mind you.
