I would say, the modern national heroes of my country, the Philippines, are the OFWs(Overseas Filipino Workers), sending their hard-earned money back home helping their families back home and the Philippine economy in more ways than one. There are more than 8M (about 10%of the population) of these heroes out there in all parts of the world who've sent about US$11B in remittances to the Philippines last year.
In the history books, our national hero is Jose P. Rizal, poet, writer, activist, martyr. Got executed by the Spaniards for his underground activities and his writings, probably inciting rebellion.

Here in phil- Dr. Jose Rizal
He is the nat'l. hero of the PHIL. He wrote "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo". You will see his monument at Luneta Park.
