To travel to the U.S. you need a visa, which you must request at your nearest U.S consulate or embassy.
The green card is the american equivalent to the european residents permit.
You request it once you are in the States. if you would like to stay for longer a period of time than that specified on your visa.

To Travel to the US you need a Visa. If you are lucky you may want to stay and work in the US you can apply for a green card, that is a long wait to obtain. If you find a company in the US that needs your skills you can apply for a different type of Visa. Check on line or go to your US Consulate, they will explain the different types of Visas available.

I think a visa is the document which lets you travel to the US. I'm pretty sure there are different types of visa's too. Like a visa to travel in the US, or a visa to work within it. A green card is the document which means you are a permanent resident. They are not easily obtained to my knowledge.

if I'm not mistaken Green card is a card that allows us to permanently stay in USA... and not to travel to USA... if you just want to travel there then a USA visa should be enough...
