Make a great all-purpose window cleaner by combining 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent, and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Combine in a spray bottle. Shake to blend.

I never use spray glass cleaners as they leave a film over the glass which build up and up and form a coating on the glass. I use warm water with a spot of washing up liquid and a window leather. Wring out most of the water and wash the glass with the leather. Then comes the best bit......use a good, and it must be a good rubber window blade .Pull the blade across the window, wiping the blade after each stroke. Finally, wipe the very edge of the window at the side and bottom with a piece of kitchen roll. It is important not to rub the rest of the glass...just scrape with the blade and leave it. This method will get your windows really clean and smear free and whats more it is very quick ! This same technique can be done on mirror doors.Hope this helps.

Here's a couple suggestions from ehow.com and the link for more tips (there's lots).
http://www.ehow.com/tips_431_1.html
Mix 1 gal water to 1/4 c vinegar. Wash your windows, using a rag or sponge soaked in the solution and wrung out. Follow up with squeegee or dry cloth, then wipe down with wadded newspaper.
Use 1 tablespoon cornstarch in a bucket of warm water. Dip a rag or sponge in the water solution and wash the window. Follow by drying with a clean dry towel. Works great on glass and mirrors inside the house also.

Use Mr Mustle & clean with kitchen roll shine it as it dries. Do not clean in the sun as it will dry too quick.(2) Buy a profesional sqeegee from a cleaning supply shop you can also buy a water applicator or use a clean grease free dish cloth. Use hot water with washing up luiquid in it. Start at the top of the window the art is not to take the squeegee of the window until you have finished cleaning it. Use a curved motion making sure the edges are cleaned, starting from the top to the bottom. wipe any water runs off with kitchen roll.

Besides the vinegar and water mix already mentioned I just seen on TV yesterday to then use a coffee filter to wipe the window clear for a streak free finish. Also newspaper works for this. They don't leave lint like paper towels do.

Since we live in 21 century, there' s really no need in using prehistorical methods.Besides, most of the time you have a smear on a window or a mirror-it is because of a paper you wipe it with.
Windex "orange" or Windex"berry" are the best so far, plus it smells incredible. And if you're doing cleaning inside the house,i'd recommend using a microfiber cloth,or just a ripped old cotton shirt or towel. For the outside cleaning I'd use a window wiper and same cotton cloth. :)
Or just call me to do it ;)

Sounds like the smears are dirt that's not completely cleaned off. I always wash the windows at least twice, the first time to loosen up the schmutz.. When the windows are starting to look respectable, wash them one more time - BUT wipe the cleaner off in horizontal strokes on one side and vertical strokes on the other. That way you can tell at a glance which side needs a little more polishing.

I just use windex and a paper towel - but I'm lazy.
My mom swears by some ancient stuff called glass wax. You smear it on & it gets foggy (like car wax) & then you wipe it off - using newspaper works the best. Whatever this does to your windows, it keeps stuff from collecting on them so you don't have to clean them as often & when you do, they get really nice.

Yes. Vinegar and water (I think like 1 part vinegar, 5 parts water, or something like that).
Also, wipe/dry the windows with newsprint...It actually helps.

I use water and a micro fiber towel to clean and a window rag to dry with. Or use another dry fiber towel. I clean cars and it works for all my customers.
Oh yeah you can get them at Wal-Mart cheap 4 or 5 in a pack.
Reuseable
