If you're using Yahoo! Mail, you can use Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Toolbar or a Yahoo! Widget to find out when you have new mail.

If you download Thunderbird email client http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ you will get pop ups in the system tray; it can also play a default sound or one of your choosing. You can download additional email.wavs here - http://www.thesoundarchive.com/email.asp
Another free POP3 tool is ePrompter. "ePrompter's email notification features include a unique rotating tray icon, the main ePrompter screen, audio alerts for new messages, and a choice of five unique screensavers that let you know at a glance the number of new messages in each account. " You can get it here - http://www.eprompter.com/

If you want to get Yahoo mail notifications make sure POP3 is enabled in yahoo mail settings! Setting up Yahoo in Thunderbird is a little tricky but it is a very stable email client; it's much easier to get mail notification via ePrompter but sometimes it doesn't work so well in my experience. But hey, they're both free...

Try Email_notifier toolbar, works with any pop3 mailbox and most freebies like yahoo hotmail etc. It's primarilly a firefox addon but you can use this with IE too.

Firefox addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2595/
IE Installer: http://emailnotifier.ourtoolbar.com/?platform=ie

if you use a chat program that connects to yahoo it will sometimes do it for you. i know Trillian (www.trillian.cc) tells me "Stueck9356, you have X new messages in your inbox". if you are online and you get a message it will tell me "Stueck9356, new message from someone@something.com". very good stuff..
