Is there even the slightest chance that Beckham gave up the armband before McClaren took it and gave it to someone else, or maybe he was asked to give it up, because the F.A or Coaching staff didn't want to cause the new head coach any sort of public dispute.

Beckham has been a great captain for England over the years, really his time is up(not as a player) and i doubt he will play a major if any part in the next world cup, I believe the next captain will be John terry or Gerrard, both players would love the responsibility and thrive on it, Beckham could not carry the the team any more like he has done in the past, yet Gerrard and terry both have that in them.I know England(the nation) love beckham but it is all about how the players react to the captain and Gerrard can inspire any one!
I Believe beckham works very closely with the management and i don't think he would of had to give it up but in himself believed it was the best option!

There is no logic in giving up the captain's armband, but still wanting to be in the England team. Unless, of course, he was tipped off that he was going to be replaced, and would rather resign than be sacked.

But then again logic is not David Beckham's strong point.

Well, Beckham is an intuitive man, and was probably all too aware of what would be said about his performance in recent matches.

But I do think he is one of the closest we've got to a modern folk hero, and has noble instincts - he thought it was best for his team.

I dont think so. He probably realised that a change would be better for all and himself as an English footballer so he could put 100% into playing his best football and not have to worry about leading the team.
