Does anyone know exactly what purpose they have in nature other then to sting the hell out of gardeners and annoy people enjoying the current heatwave?

they actually kill and live off garden pests most of the year, They only start on fruit at the end of the year because the queen has thorwn them out of the nest, and that's where they used to get the sweet stuff from to keep them alive. So they go to other things to get sugar, and if you try to get the fruit at the same time, they will ssting. If you jsut ignore them they will not sting you, but if you flap your hands at them, or try swatting them, they get angry, and lash out back.

Why Do Wasps Exist

No, no one can prove God's existence. The Bible is not proof of God's existence. Looking around is not proof of God's existence. The majority of the world believing in a religion (nevermind that there are many different beliefs and gods out there) doesn't mean a damn thing either. Face it, there is no God, no afterlife, no rapture, no good or evil. Deal with it. Also, for those who keep saying that you have to prove that he doesn't exist...sigh....You can't prove a negative, alright? You can't prove that something doesn't exist. It is up to those who make a claim to prove it's veracity. And we're still waiting.

Take a look around and you'll see the beauty of God, never mind the fact of species of wasps laying eggs in caterpillars to be eaten alive, or how spiders eat their mates, or the horrible diseases that are spread. That was caused by the Devil, and by human sin and we're all guilty of it even before we are born. -All said in a snide, arrogant, Christiany voice-

Yellow Jackets are natures scourge, but I know that most wasps keep control on soft bodied pests like Caterpillars and such. In fact parasitic wasps are the best defense against them.

They have no other purpose, so far as I can see, other than being able to turn a beautiful sunny day, into a Stephen King style nightmare. In my opinion they only exist to p*ss us off, and persecute those unfortunate enough amongst us who are allergic to their stings!
But wait, apparently there are some folk who think that they do have a purpose. Check out this site for lots of reasons why wasps exist. (I'm still not happy about it though!)

"Wasps are highly important to ecosystems. Sawflies consume vegetation and so limit plant growth. Most other wasps are either parasitic or predaceous and therefore play a vital role in limiting the populations of thousands of other insect species. All wasps are eaten by other species, thereby providing many links in the food web. Many parasitic wasps have been cultured and used in the biological control of agricultural pests. Although a few of the stinging wasps are considered nuisances, they also provide benefits. Yellow jackets and paper wasps, for example, prey on caterpillars and other larvae that can destroy crops. Wasps feed on flower nectar and play a role in pollination."
