Your doctor has years of medical training and is right!!!!! Shingles is a reactivation of the dormant chicken pox virus. It can be reactivated by stress. Maybe you were stressed by the spider bite and this caused the virus to reactivate. I had shingles once it's horrible. Hope you are feeling better!!!!

RE:
Can a bout of shingles be caused by a spider bite. Serious answers only please.?
Two weeks ago i got a bad spider bite. The next day i had a very bad, painful case of shingles. The docs said it was just a coincidence. I disagree.

Shingles is not caused by a spider bite. The pain of shingles is caused by an inflammation of the nerve that lies just beneath the skin's surface. Shingles originates from the same virus which causes chickenpox. The virus, after infecting the person with chickenpox, retreats to the nervous system where it remains dormant for many years. It reappears in the form of shingles, only if the immune system is weakened, or as a result of a more severe or lengthy illness, extreme stress, or a therapy involving suppression of the immune system. Herpes zoster is common in people with a weakened immune system, such as AIDS patients or people taking anticancer or immunosuppressant drugs. Shingles is more common in the elderly, who tend to have less efficient immune systems. Overall health and nutrition often determine the severity of illness and length of recovery.

I am wracking my brain over this. I was bitten by a brown recluse spider, and within 2 or 3 days had a rash "looking like shingles". There HAS to be a connection. I have never had an outbreak of shingles before. Furthermore, I unfortunately passed this on to my granddaughter as chicken pox. There has to be a connection with the nerves being reached. Worst experience of my life. NOT a coincidence.

Yes, It happened to me 7 yrs ago. Lying on the grass on a blanket I was bitten on my elbow/arm by something. Partner and I saw a small black spider run off the blanket. I kept an eye on the bite mark. A few days later it became itchy and my elbow joint became very painful. Went to the doctor and explained about the bite but was told it was unrelated and I had shingles. It was explained to me that maybe my immune system was week and the spider bite pushed it further down allowing the shingles to become active. So I guess that's what took place but I certainly connect the two.

Your doc is right. Shingles are caused by having had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccination. It has nothing to do with a spider bite, which has only localized venom.
Do keep an eye on the spider bite, they can cause long term problems in the bite area, sometimes for months afterwards.
Cheers,
jc
