DOS 6.22 came with a program called unformat. That will recover (some) files deleted when you formatted your hard drive. If you can get hold of that, then you *might* be able to recover some. I very much doubt it will still work, but its worth a try.
There are lots of programs available to do the job on newer NTFS drives, however, most (all?) of the programs are commercial. Google for "unformat" and you'll find a selection.
I don't know the name of one off hand, but you might have some success searching for similar open source (ie, free) programs at sourceforge.net

YOU CAN GET YOUR DATA BACK, Even if you formatted the hard drive. The software is called Restorer2000 Professional
But you must have a second disk to restore the data to. You do not want to write to the disk that you are trying to recover data from, you'd just write over the data that you want to recover.
I have used this software several times! IT WORKS!!!!!!!

Nope, not once you have formatted. They are gone. You can retrienve files that have been deleted, but not after the drive has been reformated. Bummer.

Yes, there are tools available to "unformat" a drive. First thing is don't use it, don't save anything on it. If possible remove the drive until you have the recovery software. This has happened to me before, its doable.
or look for Data recovery experts in your area, if you are not sure you can do it.
