Also, can anyone tell me what the laws are on my male collegue being paid much more than I am being paid for doing the same job?

I am not sure about all your question, try asking your boss or using a search engine.
I know if you earn over £120 a week you have to pay taxes, also there are no laws (as far as I am aware) about this. Employers can give him a pay rise and not you even if, in your opinion, you are doing the same job, They might have reasons for this etc and its not against the law.

the answer to the first part of your question is if your code is 509 then your allowance is £5090.00 p.a before you are liable to tax.

With the exception of the armed forces, you have the full power of the law behind you to ensure you are not discriminated in the work place because of gender, age, religon, etc etc. You haven't said if you work for a large Company. If you do then I expect you have a union rep or even an equal oppotunities officer, they should be the first people to approach. To adivise you properly though I would need to know both your job titles and how long you have both been employed by this company .
