I completely agree. In most restraunts I've been able to trade tables w/ someone else, sometimes it is just a compatability issue. I was a bartender way longer than I was a waiter so I have not had to deal w/ issues. If you're an asshole you're outta there.

I was a waitress for a while and while the right thing to do as a customer is to say " May I have ____ for a waiter/waitress" . The waiter/waitress has no right to deny service because he/she is working for the owner of the restaurant. The customer is rarely right but as long as you don't own the restaurant you have no choice but to serve whatever idiot, A**H^%$, that comes in.

i think a waiter/waitress should be allowed to refuse service to a customer especially if the customer is an absolute snob or just an asshole. my sister was a waitress at a pizza hut and a bunch of snobs came in at lunch hour and bitched the entire time they were there about stupid things and started throwing spit wads to other customers and made rude comments about others and my sister tried to please these people and get to them as soon as possible but there was no pleasing them and finally she had to tell the manager how bad they were and the manager had to kick them out (this was during lunch hour so the restaurant was full)

They can and they can pass the tip along to another waiter/waitress. If they are that picky they should not be working in the customer service industry where you get all kinds.

As a server, I had refused service to a guest that had been problematic. Most places have the right to refuse service, and as a server if there is going to be a problem, switch tables with another server or let your manager know that there could be an issue with a table. For the most part, if you keep a smile on your face and just take them what they ask for, guests are okay with that and there are few problems. We all have our nightmare customers, though...

Waiters and waitresses give away tables all the time. We do reserve the right to serve people, we just don't ask the manager about it. There was a very mean man who used to come to the restaraunt I worked in and we used to pay a coworker 5$ just to take him off our hands. He would yell and swear and be so difficult to please. His wife would sit there quietly and smile at you sometimes. She looked so ashamed. Bad customers suck.

I think they should be allowed to do so. What if it's a waitress and the patron is being very offensive in a sexually harrassing manner. I think it should go both ways. But only for a serious reason.......not just because they don't like the way someone looks or a superficial reason like that.

Most restaurants have signs posted that state
" We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"
Yes I do believe the waitstaff have the right to not wait on difficult customers, I know they can try to get a co worker to switch tables.

I agree...
The fact that the diner is paying does not give them the irrefutable right to be obnoxious. I would love to see certain diners (we all know the type), have to promise a 35% tip in order to get someone to wait their table!

Amen Mona!
I've been waiting tables for 18yrs. I'm about to give notice because I'm toast! I'm sick of people not seeing beyond the apron. I always greet my guests with a simle and a warm welcome. A lot of peolple don't even have the decency to respond or even look at me.
Every manager or owner I have ever worked with would not have a problem with me refusing to serve someone. They want the guest to have a positive experience and come back, that would not happen with a reluctant server. In the event that you are stuck with them, kill them with kindness.
