word of mouth advertising, inexpensive distribution, and wide range of exposure.

It's perhaps easier than ever to "get a name for yourself" because of the internet. There are small little bands that I like from several states away. Without the internet I'd never have heard about them.

Yes, File sharing gets the names of bands and songs out there in the public. Someone could say, "hey i like this song, I'll buy their CD so I can hear all of them wherever ther is a CD player."

It doesn't. Back in the good old days with Audio Galaxy it helped to discover bands you also might like, but the current p2p tools are just good for free evaluation.
