Suffrage is, "The right or privilege of voting; franchise." So, "universal suffrage" is the right of every citizen of legal age to vote (women, minorities, etc.). The reason why it's desirous should be self-evident.

Yes, Chimko, the answers so far are right. U.S. means that everyone can vote.

It may be of interest in our own history, to note that when the United States was founded, suffrage was NOT universal. Women and slaves could not vote--only white males--and even then, there was often a requirement that you own significant property,
in some states.

It means that all adults can vote. I would assume people in Hong Kong are yearning for it because they can't vote.

In a few words, is the right the people have to vote for whoever they want in the government. Some countries don't have a democratic system so they don't have the right to choose who they want to rule so here they want to have an alternative.

One person said you miss more some you once had &took for granted than something you never had. Under the Brits they had freedom they have less under China. Taiwan is watching.
