History begins with the recording of events by contemporaries and passing this on to later generations. The first such records were oral tradition, and got altered into myths and legends through the generations.

One of the oldest provable recording is the great flooding of the Black Sea basin, raising the water level by more than 200 m and drowning a multitude of early towns. There might have been a prolonged wet season, too (40 days in Noah's legend), but the real reason for this drastic flooding was the opening of the strait of Bosporus, and the rain cannot be proven by surviving evidence. Landing the ark on the slopes of Ararat becomes likely, though.

While charmingly consistent with archaeological evidence for the battle-axe material culture of the Neolithicum, the migration of Odin etc. to Scandinavia as described in Snorre's Heimskringla cannot be proven.

"Proper" history relies on written documents, and starts in the fertile crescent and China 4 to 5 thousand years ago. The battle of Kadesh probably is the first instance of recorded military history.
