The original (USA) script title was "Adventure of the Starkiller: Episode 1--The Star Wars," according to IMDB (The Internet Movie Database). Of course the theatre title--the popular tite--was simply "Star Wars."

"Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope" is actually the reissue name, after Episode I was made.

The old (USA) video box name was indeed "Star Wars IV: A New Hope," with no mention of "Episode," however.

Incidentally, in Mexico Star Wars is known as "*La Guerra de las Galaxias"--War of the Galaxies, or "Galaxy Wars."

*Not to be confused with, "La Guerra de las Estrellas" (The War of the Stars, or Star Wars)--the (USA) Spanish title released in the US.

The current movies (the Star Wars you can buy now) will say A New Hope. But thats because Lucas is always going back to his old movies and re-working things about them. Everytime he re-releases them, there is something different. When it first came out though, it was just plan Star Wars.

It was originally called Star Wars. Once Lucas got the funding from 20th Century Fox to do sequels (later prequels) he added "A New Hope".
