Generally they are cheating the ref into giving them a free kick - just like Portugal did through most of the match against England on Saturday. I don't mind losing a game but I object to losing to a cheating team!

I have worked part time at Texas Stadium near Dallas for years, primarily on the field level as a medic for the players. It is my personal opinion that a large portion of NFL players are spoiled millionaire prima donas. Now I don't know much about rugby players, but in all fairness, have you seen the SIZE of some of these NFL gorillas. I don't believe that the impacts in rugby are any harder than American style football. The game moves much faster than it appears on TV, and these dudes are HUGE. I am 6'2", so I am not a little guy myself. Maybe the attitude of the participants is a little different. I will say this, no one will continue to play with a knee that has been blown out. It's a common injury in the NFL. I have treated these injuries, and no matter how tough you think you are, you can't just shake it off. Has there ever been a fatality in a rugby game? Just curious.

That is a problem best explained on the basis of game theory. Check out: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory )

In rugby this sort of acting is absolutely uncommon.
In soccer, it seems to be some unwritten law to "act" whenever someone touches you, pulls on your shirt or whatever. The reason is simple, the acting is for signaling the ref: "Hey, just in case you didn`t see it: I`ve just been hit/kicked/pushed..."

Pretty pathetic but the sad truth is, because everybody does it (EVERYBODY!) it would be a big disadvantage for every player not to "act". Espescially during the world cup.

Supporters of the team whose player gets a free kick after a dive, call his action "clever". The team that is affected by the ref decision on the base of a fake foul shaouts "FRAUD!" I am afraid, that is just the way it is.

Interesting: In a system where those kind of "acting performances" are not common but very much unliked (like the English Premier League), you hardly ever see such scenes. But when England plays in the world cup, English players act just as everybody else...

It's cheating and it's about time players were given the yellow card for doing this. This would also cut down on the idiot jibes about football players being soft.

because they are soft and its about acting, if you look like it hurt you and the you see your team is getting worn down, you can fake an injury and the refs will stop the clock until you get taken off the field.. also when you get tackled in football, the ref doesnt always get to see the hit so if he sees you fall he will pay closer attention to the guy who hit you, it shows the ref they are playing rough and he will eventually get carded if he is playing to rough.... but all in all the are SOFT!

cos they are paid too much and are softer lads - rugby is a real hard but rewarding sport - footballers should try boxing - they would last until the first time they got a fist in their gut

Because rugby players are MEN, and footy players are wussies. When they score a goal they go roung kissing each other, in rugby they thump each other.

to give themselves and teammates a chance to grab a breather and to possibly influence the ref into awarding a free kick or card...it is one of the most annoying things that really hurts the game
