You cannot purposely make twins. These things just happen. Like you cannot decide the sex of your baby, you cannot just decide to have twins.

Twins can be fraternal, or identical. In fraternal twins, your ovaries have ovulated two eggs, and your partner's semen has fertilized both of them. Specific races (notably blacks) are more likely to produce fraternal twins, but to make it happen.... Might talk to doctor about things that increase ovulation, but I don't think there's even a half a chance.

All of the people who swear by them just got lucky, because they had a 50% chance of getting what they wanted anyway!

As for twins, there's not much you can do to get them. Fraternal twins do run in families. Also, women who are in their 30s or older are more likely to have fraternal twins, due to the fact that their bodies release eggs more erratically, but there is also a higher chance of chromosomal defects like Down Syndrome with an older mother. There is also anecdotal evidence that eating a diet rich in yams may promote fraternal twins (this comes from an area of Africa where women eat a lot of yams and have a lot of twins.) Of course, this can't be proven, but it can't hurt, either, 'cause yams are so good for you!

As for identical twins, that happens when a fertilized egg splits, so the twins have the same DNA. Identical twins are always boy-boy or girl-girl. You can't have a boy-girl set of identical twins. However, there are also girl-girl and boy-boy fraternal twins.

If you really MUST have twins, some doctors will give you fertility drugs, though most won't give them to you because you just WANT twins. Although I just read an article in this month's Mother Jones magazine about a well-known fertility doctor who WILL implant 2 embryos during IVF (invitro fertilization) for couples who want twins.

Also, how about adoption? If you REALLY want twins, it's actually quite easy to adopt twins. There are many twin babies out there waiting to be adopted. Adoption can be pricey, but it's cheaper than IVF.

Remember, though, even with the advances in medicine, it's still riskier to have twins than just one. You pregnancy will be harder, and on average, twins spend twice as long in the hospital as regular babies. Your twins would have a higher chance of having health problems than just one baby. Believe me, once you have one baby, you will have your hands full! And once you have one healthy one, you'll never want to change a thing about your lovely son or daughter.

If fraternal (non identical) twins run in your family on your side then it is possible. Identical twins just happen randomly. Either way there's nothing you can do to increase the chances of this aside from taking fertility treatments which i'm sure wouldn't be prescribed just for you to have twins. this is why twins are so special.
