Its a mixture of truth and fiction. By treading on the edge of fact, it seemed so real. It also touches on Da Vinci's mysterious life. The self flagellation of the albino guy is done by some Opus Dei, and they acknowledge it. The knights templar did once exist, and they did have some mysterious issue with the Catholic church. So a real mix of fact and fiction.

As a historian, I can tell you that the book is full of historical errors. With such poor research that went into the book I didn't even give the movie the time of day.
