I work in retail management and I cannot find anyone in the current generation that actually wants to work! What is wrong with people's work ethic these days? We pay more then most places do, are flexable, and really don't ask them to do much compared to other places, but we have gone through a couple dozen people in 3 months due to the fact that they refuse to do anything but sit on their butt. Is there a reason no one wants to actually work anymore?

It is difficult to find individuals to work because,
1) We work in a country where employees retirements 401K's are lost by the company with no regard for the employee and they are just out of luck, hard road for someone who has worked hard, long hours and ready for retirement and it won't ever be there.
2) The companies too often over burden there good workers and let the loafers get the same pay for less work and taking more days off.

3) There is no respect for good workers, they are viewed only as a piece of machinery and when they are no longer able to work i.e. job injury or poor health they are put out as a liability and not worth being bothered with.
4) If a company can pay someone less for doing the same job they will and abolish the job and rehire the individual willing to work for less pay.

The list is endless, I could go on. Been there 55 years old.

Maybe it is your management skills. Did you ever think that these people do not get along with you because of the way you treat them. Step back and take a look. I worked with this women who was in management. She was a total ***** and the company could not figure out why everyone was quiting. A day did not go by when she did not have someone in tears or degrating them. THe company sent her to a seminar because she was good at her job, just not good with people. There we so many complaints about her behaivor that she was let go. She was on a power trip because she was in management. The seminar did not help. I am not saying you are a bad person, maybe it is your style of management. Maybe the job has gone to your head. Try stepping down to there level and see how they feel. Spend a day working with them, doing what they do and for that one day do not be the boss. Be a co worker. Come up with creative ideals to keep the employees. Do incentives. Say who ever goes a month without missing work will have their name put in for a drawing and give a cash insentive. Say if eveyone in the place goes a month without missing any days and if they do their job, that you will close down early one day and you will treat them all to a pizza party a local pizza place. Or give out fake dollar bucks for good behaivor or a job well down. Give out a fake buck each day they come to work. After three months or so have an auction and they can bid on items with their fake money. IF someone went out of their way to help an other employee reward them. If someone is not doing their job then take away some of their reward bucks they have earned. I have worked in managment and had to come up with creative ways to keep employees. Or one day at lunch surprise them with pizza and pop. I worked for a company in CA in managment and these things really worked. It is sad to say but in order to get people to work you have to get them motivated. Maybe your company has an expense account that will allow you to pay for these things. I had monthly amount I could spend. I also spent my own money because my employees performance made an impact on my job reviews and my raises. These things make the job more fun and eases the stress. When hiring these people let it be know what is expected and tell them there is a probation period and after this period if they are still there they will get a raise. If they are sitting on their buts doing nothing in the first week. why are they still there. The problem may also be that you really dont ask them to do much compared to other companies. This could be the reason. Tell them what is expected of them and follow through. Once a month I would have a pot luck in the office and we would have a meeting and discuss things and have an open forume for people to discuss what was on their mind with their job. You have to make these people feel wanted and valuable. Wish I new more about your type of employment. I would be more then happy to help you for free get some ideas going.

Every job I've had, I've worked my butt off, been treated like sh*t and gotten absolutely nowhere. If you treat your employees well and pay well, you are the exception. Employers see their employees as nothing more than numbers; almost any employer will screw their employees out of everything they can get. After awhile, the employees caught on. If we're gonna be screwed, why bother putting effort into the job?

The unemployment lines are filled with 50+ workers who have been terminated because of their age. These people have experience, and know how to work. Try them.
