Note: I want an alternative to bedding since my bunny makes a MESS with her bedding.

I put up a four inch "fence" around the perimieter of my bunny's cage with plexiglass. I had them cut it for me to the right dimensions at Menards and just butted the pieces up to the sides (on the inside) of the cage. Now Mega-bun can't kick his litter out through the holes!

That is the reason for cages that are up out of the bedding. There IS no way rabbits on a floor won't be messy. They dig. They scatter bedding and feed. They are wet both from urine and bowls that get dumped and wasted. A cage hung above the bedding keeps the rabbit cleaner and dry. They can have a small board to sit on in one corner - a place to get off the wire (akin to a chair - sit and relax). If they mess on it turn it over.
Decide what management style works best for you. If you have your heart set on solid floors and heavy bedding that is the reality of choices from it.

You can put down some but if the rabbits are outside too much bedding may cause bacterial build up as they excrete waste. Mother rabbits will naturally pull their fur out to make a nest when pregnant. Most bedding packages have recommended depth levels to put out for certain species.

In my opinion it is best to use straw for bedding. Other materials especially cedar chips or pine can be toxic if eaten. My rabbits are super healthy and they sit on a small bed of straw which I change frequently. Mine also poop through hardware cloth on the bottom of their cages. Their little hutches have the straw.
