1. Spartacus - shows that human beings can overcome the oppression of slavery, even that of the Roman Empire, if they are willing to fight and die for their rights. Powerful movie written by Dalton Trumbo who also wrote _Johnny Got His Gun_ (anti-war book) and was blacklisted during the 50s. It starred Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. Great great movie.

2. Casablanca - Humphrey Bogart at his best anti-hero role, Rick of Rick's cafe. Here we see the little guy standing up against the Nazis in a movie that is both romantic and heroic. No, he did not say "Play it again, Sam" in it.

3. It's a Wonderful Life - OK, this one was a rough choice. I did want to put Hitchcock's Vertigo here but I kept coming back to this one. Here is one man making a difference and never seeing it until he tries to kill himself. Then he is given a glimpse of what the world would be like had he never been born. The lesson is one for everybody, not just Jimmy Stewart who is beyond excellent here, that what we do counts and counts beyond our knowing.
