If it is so low that chk disk wont work, then to the other people Disk Defrag will not work. Windows needs 15% of the hard-drive free to run disk defrag properly. (If it will run at all with that low of disk space.)
First good answer is to empty the recycle bin if there is anything there. Most times when your computer gets low on hard-drive space it will empty it itself.
Second if you only have 6 programs and you really want to keep them, then you need to delete some Files.
These may be photos you have, or videos, or any other junk your keeping. You could try saving them to a CD but with your hard-drive so full that may not work until you clear some space (hard-drive space) for the computer to work.
After you have some space cleared then run CHK Disk and delete all the files it finds.
Then copy and back up all the files you would like to keep to CD's or DVD's.
Windows NEEDS 15% of the hard-drive FREE at all times to function properly, when it gets below that level of free space it will start to slow up, and when it gets to the point that it has to warn you, like it did, THAT IS A CRITICAL LEVEL, which may cause it to crash, or just delete some data at random to free itself and prevent a crash.
A lot of the repairs I have done over the years have been because the Hard-drive was too full and crashed the machine. (crashed, meaning locked up)

It may not be the number of programs but the number of files you have. Some files DVDs for example are huge. You should specify the Operating system you have for more advice. In most of them there is an area that shows the disk space used. It is also possible you have a virus. Some virus's deliberately fill up the disk drive with Junk. If you search for computer associates you can download an antivirus program that works free for the first year

It's not how many programs, but how much disk space they use - for example, The Sims 2 takes up over 2 GBs of space - that's huge! Deleting a large program or two would greatly help the problem, especially if those six programs are as large or larger than the one I mentioned - it would really improve performance.

Clean everything up. Act as if your computer is a house; there's always household chores needed to be done. Here are ways to do that:
* Go to tools, internet options, then CLEAR HISTORY, DELETE FILES, and DELETE COOKIES.
* Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Disk Clean Up.
* Delete stuff you find on your computer to be no use or what you don't need anymore. This means pictures, documents, and games. All of these take disk space, and you should start clearing them.

Run Disk Cleaner, That should help, Its in the system tools folder. Also, Check for large programs in the add/remove programs application and delete any programs you are not using. Smaller ones wont matter, Its the big motherfuckers that take up the space. I build computers so take my advice-Mike

Do both Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup one at a time then restart your computer. After that go to the start menu, click control panel, then click Add/Remove prgrams and delete all prgams you no longer use. Also use a CD and write all your pictures, text documents, powerpoints, whatever then delete them off your computer. I recommend making two copies of the disks with all your files. After all your files are on CDs do the
Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup then restart your computer again.

You proablly have a small hard drive then, you should run scan disk and defrag, also disk clean up, try emptying your recycleing bin, if all that doesnt work and you still have no room, start deleteing what ever you dont need. If you dont want to delete anything, go ahead and get a new Hard drive and set it up as your slave, so you will have more room, Hope this helps.

Yeah, you have to free up harddrive space, the area in the comp that permanently stores stuff, like games and files. Delete what is not used...
Oh, and keep the number of windows you have open to a minimum.

Basically it means your hard disk is getting full. It doesn't matter how many programs, rather a lot of what those programs generate... and Windows itself. You should start by uninstalling programs you no longer use. Deleting temporary files, etc. If needed, start uninstalling parts of Windows you never use.

This maybe due to a number of reasons, either your memory (chache) is full, or your temporary files are too many and needs to be deleted if it server dependent, the network administrator has allocated lesser amount of space to your PC.
