As others have said, a horseshoe should hang like a U to keep the luck from spilling out. It is also said that 7 iron nails should be used to hang the horseshoe. 7 is a lucky number and iron is not liked by mischevious fairies and other evil spirits who might want to try and steal the luck or cause other trouble. That is why you hang the iron horseshoe above the front door, to keep those demons from entering the house.

Either way, I have read some good answers here, they both are right. To hold in your luck, fix it like the letter "U", and hold your luck in your home. Otherwise, you could hang it as an upside down "u" and share the luck amongst your visitors and family as they walk under, it is said that if the visitor/ family member doesn't mean you any harm, then good luck will fall upon them as they pass under it.

I have heard reasons for hanging them either way. Some people believe that if you hang them with the ends up it holds luck in, while some people believe that hanging them with the ends down lets luck flow down to whomever walks beneath them.

A horseshoe is supposed to go in a U shape, worn side against the wall, but it is supposed to be put above the front door, not on a wall. It's supposed use it to keep the devil out of your house (why, I'm afraid I don't know). If you put it the wrong way up, it's supposed to invite the devil in (again, I don't know the whys and wherefores, I'm afraid).

They're supposed to be hung with the ends pointed up to "catch" the luck. If they're hung the other way, the luck spills out.

Just like the letter U. If the open ends point down, the luck runs out.

Upside down (points going up) to hold the luck in, and they are normally hung above exterior doors.

Whichever way, use screws, not nails to mount it. A horseshoe on the noggin hurts like blazes and can ruin your whole afternoon!
