The concept originated in 1993 and the first players went on sale in Japan in 11/97, and players and discs went on sale in the U.S. in 3/98 and 2 million DVDs were sold that first year.
On older VHS tapes I own it is weird to see advertisements for DVDs and seeing "soon there will be nearly 3,000 titles offered!)
The cost of the DVD varied depending on where you live. I live in the Midwest of the united states and the first ones I recall seeing on sale at Best Buy were around $35.

I was around 10 years old when DVDs came out. I remember owning a ton of VHS tapes. I sold all the tapes at yardsales and on ebay. I also kept all of the DVDs. I like now 10 years later or so DVDs are $5-20 @ Walmart ^_^ Back then they where like $20 per DVD. Some still are today.
