Yes the popularity is genuine. That is why the hype. Media can only create so much buzz. Without interest the buzz will soon fall off and be forgotten. Without fire there will be no smoke. The media can be used to spark interest in something but if there is no participation all intrest will soon fade.
With the massive interest in football then it's an easy flame to fan. Exposure is the name of the game so the media will follow the masses.

I doubt that the media and sporting industry are partners in some big conspiracy to make more money. People like football so the media reports on it to get more viewers. Same with other sports.

Which football?
If you mean the FIFA thing, I watch it because it's like the Oylimpics, you just watch to see what country plays the best soccer. Any other time of the year I don't much care.
If you meant NFL, It's a fun sport to get into watching. Great for parties, sunday relaxing time, or just the love of sports.
