Above posters are correct. If we didn't have commercials, 90% of TV could not exist. Commercial advertising pays a lot of the funding that goes into making TV shows, and if it did not exist, we would pay huge amounts for even local channels, to finance the act of making the shows.

Without commercials there would be no TV shows, soap operas or anything. The whole point of TV programming is to get you to watch the commercials. They are the main event.

A TV channel puts in a lot of money to produce a TV program and to make it reach viewers around the country/world. So the channel has to recover its costs by airing commercials. It's all about money, ultimately.

Technically, we don't "have to". TV networks & sponsers stop a program to try to sell you something -- we have no choice in the matter. That's the time we go make sandwiches, grab sodas, use the bathroom... I can't remember having watched many in my entire life! Yet, through the cost of goods, we pay for these commercials.

Sucks royaly!

To keep our television programming free. Why do you think PBS needs all those pledges? 'Cos they're privately aired. Running commercials keeps the costs down. Nothing is free, you know... ;)
