I think because most Americans don't want to take the time to understand the game, to learn the rules. Also, it was not a game that originated here so that might play a part in it and many use the "low scores" as an excuse for why they don't like the sport. As for me, I think it is the only sport worth watching.
I hate watching sports with NO action like:
baseball, nothing happens unless someone manages to hit the ball
basketball, they are all tall enough to just drop it in the hoop so where is the challenge?
football, it takes half an hour to get from one end of the field to the other (only reason points are high is because a td is 6 points)
it is more fun watching grass grow!
golf, a long boring walk with very little action
hockey, a reason for grown men to beat each other senseless
And in all those sports, the constant annoying time outs drive me nuts!
I also think some Americans feel threatened by the level of action in soccer. Think about it, unlike other sports, there aren't constant time outs. These guys are fit! They run constantly during those 45 minute halves. These guys really do play a sport! Give me soccer anyday!

MONEY I was living in the USA when they won the ladies World Cup. When I suggested that It was a great opportunity to promote the game I was told that their is not enough money in it.
The other reason is that the support is for home grown games where there is very little played in other countries this gives them dominance and they can claim world champ status
If the rugby playing countries took to American Football the world champions would not be from the USA. As for the USA playing Rugby top USA Football players could not last a game where they have to be on the field for a solid 45min each way. Rugby is the true mans game, Aussie Rules is for supermen
Regarding comment on not enough score why is Cricket not popular it must be the highest scoring game around

because don't get me wrong but the US doesn't care about the rest of the world so thinks that the sports that are popular in theis coutry should be the most popular in the whole world too.. honestly i don't understand why american football is called football because foot doesn't touch the ball but once or twice in the game and then the real football is called soccer.. well hopefully it will change soon and football will be popular in the US too but i really doubt because not many people watch it and not many play.. so may be that's why it's not as popular as in the rest of the world...
i don't know about sucking coz the US team is in ine of the top positions according to the FIFA rancking and it has been to so many world cups and to get there is very hard.. many good teams have been left out of the competition ....

Because we know we're not good at it. And since we're americans and we're bad at something, people won't just admit it saying we're just bad, they'll say the sport is. Thats how we work, we're not bad the thing is.
But soccer is the most popular sports in elementary school, high school, and college. So something must be happening to the kids to make them think its a good sport.

They do not score enough in soccer. I watch world cup games, but I wish they would score more goals. Thats why we like football and soccer, due to the high scoring games.

I think it's because in America, they like to be the best at every sport. Those which they aren't good at, aren't popular.
