Some men seem to be more visual and frequently judge by what they first see; women take in the whole picture and see beyond the physical, intuitively sensing goodness, hearing sincerity, and other appealing qualities that make for a good partner.

As a man I can say that is not true 100% of the time, and i think some women use that as an excuse for being single, men like women that look like they put forth effort to look pretty, i am not that one in a millon guy that is the greatest lover, but i do know that if you are going to bars then they eyes are the keystone to finding what they are looking for, i would say physical attraction is an indicator of matching personality types and some people both men and women are unaware of their own levels of attraction,

According to a show on PBS the other day, it is because our brains work completely differently. Women are usually more in tune to detecting emontions and men are usually not.

Gosh, those guys are harsh.
I have never heard this, but it strikes me as true. Women are very susceptible to flattery and hearing what they like to hear, and are nice enough to overlook physical imperfections if they "feel good" about him.
Men--I'm told--see women as they see their cars, as an extension of themselves. If either looks to be in ill repair, they are ashamed to be associated with it.
That's my guess, anyway.
