Here in pa it is not required for people riding a motorcycle to wear a helmet.. But yet if you get caught without a seat belt you get a fine...Who is the idiot who came up with this law? And what states follow it ? And is it ever going to be changed back?
I think its the worst idea ever to let people splatter there brains all over the road but we don't have the right to fly threw a windshield if we want!

The insurance companies came up with that law, it is all a matter of money, how much they make as to how much it cost them. . .
15 years as a officer, I never wrote a seat belt ticket. I believe you should ware one but not because some insurance company says so

Shy, the 15 year police officer is correct. The debate in California was that with a helmet law, riders would get seriously injured, rather than killed. Lots of paraplegics due to helmets breaking a neck rather than grinding a brain across the pavement. I don't know the details as to why insurance companies felt it was cheaper to demand the helmet law, I would think it would be cheaper if the guy was dead rather than all the medical bills of someone paralyzed, but the law is passed now. And even the newspapers said the insurance companies supported it. I rode for 30 years, and only had one serious mishap. I became a very defensive driver, REALLY fast when I was riding. I don't think it should be a requirement, but a choice.

The only time I was ever hit on my bike, I had a helmet on, I ended up in the middle of an intersection & cracked my helmet. I'm glad I had it on. Helmets do impair vision, so they do have a downside. I think that about 90% of the laws passed in this country in the last 100 years need to be repealed. According to a UN survey a few years ago, the United States of America was only # 9 on the most freedoms list. Don't know what it is now, has to be lower, cuz of 911. Wonder why there is so many baby boomers, didn't have a seatbelt law when they were kids. How did they ever make it to adulthood?

I have been in public safety for over 20 years both as a cop and paramedic. I have seen some truly horrific injuries from motorcyclists not wearing helmets and from passengers in cars not wearing seatbelts. I could qoute all of the stats about fatalities going up significantly in states who repealed their helmet laws, and how much more likely you are to be seriously injured in an accident or ejected and permanently maimed or killed in a rollover without a seatbelt. Truth is, on a personal level, if you want to increase your risk while riding a motorcycle or riding in a car that's fine, it's job security for me. If it only stopped there, it would be. However, the long term costs of healthcare for people that receive serious injuries from accidents are astronomical. The extra costs are passed on to me (and all of you) in increased insurance premiums. Those who are permanently disabled, almost without exception, are dependent on publicly funded sources (Medicare / Medicaid) for their long term treatment. That, my friend, get's into MY hip pocket. By all means, feel free to exercise your freedom of choice. Just don't expect the rest of us to foot the bill because you wanted to feel the wind in your hair, or didn't want to wrinkle your shirt.

Interesting concept.
I have seen people fly threw the windshield of a car, it was just like seeing hamberger all over the place. Imagine your body just like it went threw a cheese grater, with blood and guts dripping out. Pretty neat!
It's the same in my State. You can only ride w/o a helmet if you have 10k in medical coverage, which will of coarse it will not cover a finger broken at any hospital.

There should not be any laws requiring either. There is already an universal law in effect. It is called Natural Selection. If one does not wear a seat belt or helmet, then one should not be reproducing and spreading the dumb gene.

well... ive seen some pretty bad things from motorcycle accidents and in most cases they were wearing a helmet... the most recent 1 ive acctually experiences was when a motorcyclist ran past a stopsign n smacked right into a trailor... even with the helmet his brain was pretty much coming out of his head... so i guess they thought people on motorcycles are pretty much screwed?

Insurance companies provide campaign dollars. You figure it out.
The government has no right telling us to wear seatbelts and wear helmets. If we want to splatter our brains all over the road, we should have the right to do so. They call it free will.
