I had a ferret years ago in Washington state. In California they are not legal yet. Ferrets are very playful, but some of them nip a lot. They don't nip children between the ages of 3 and 5, because the kids keep moving. The idea of the nip is to get you to chase them.

They love to be chased. They have a sense of humor. If a ferret hides under the sofa, don't stick a broom under there to flush it out. It won't come out. Instead, start blockading the exits as if to trap it under there, and it will come out!

When having fun, they make a warbling sound and emit a faint pleasant scent. When annoyed (e.g. when being held back when they want to play) they emit a faint stink. When startled (and this is not easy to do!) they release a bad odor, but it dissipates quickly.

They can be a problem around babies because they will go up inside the pant leg and scratch up the baby's leg! I have heard of them biting babies too. (The ferret is pretty small, so the bite is not dangerous, but the idea of a helpless baby getting hurt is distressing.)

It was many years ago that I had this ferret, and the ferrets then were bred for hunting (flushing varmints from their burrows) and killing rats. Since then, ferrets have been bred more as pets, and I think their temperament and musculature have changed accordingly.

Ferrets are very fun little creatures. They can be very excitable, but can also be very loving. They are VERY mischevious. They love to steal things and hide them for you to find years later. They are a big responsibility, but a worth it. They CAN get along with other animals, just be careful.

I had a ferret once. They're like cracked out kittens, and they smell.
