About 5,000 in the best, darkest places for observing. Only about 100 from a brightly lit city.

The minimum magnitude for a star to be seen with your naked eye (assuming best conditions) is mag 6.5. If you have a good astronomy program, just see how many stars are listed with magnitudes of 6.5 or brighter.

it really depends on lots of things, the side of the Earth you are at, the time of the day it is, the altitude of the place you are at, if it is a city or countryside, if the sky is clear or cloudy, and how good eyeness you have.
