Regrettably, it is not just those who post on the 'net. You are seeing a statistically significant representation of our society scrolling out before your eyes. Making allowance for the quirky shorthand that speeds IM and text messaging on its way, the fact remains that the "dumbing down" of America is well advanced and we are all the poorer for it.

I think their may be a combination of things going on. I can spell but often look like I can't because I'm such a lousy typer and get impatient as I always type fast but only 2 fingers. So maybe some people are not great at either spelling or typing which is why some people's posts become completley unintelligable. Mind you there is an option on here to check the spelling! Also I think (and this is far sadder in my opinion) a lot of people don't care about spelling and don't see it as important. I'm only 31 but have a real love of words and think it's a real pity that in this day of texting people use an ever decreasing vocabulary and don't even bother to find out how things are spelt. oh well that's how it goes I guess! glad m knot the ownly 1 that likes words n stuff

The reason why people on the internet are such lousy spellers is because they don't know how to type and look at their fingers as they type. Another words, they look at their fingers to see if they are hitting the right buttons and don't see what they are typing half of the time. Although they could be just really lazy and don't care.

As for elegance, at one end of the curve we've the least beautiful and on the different end the main. a similar could be real for earnings ... poorest on one edge and richest on the different. interior the process the bell we've each and all of the common human beings. i think of what you're asserting is real, yet basically basically a actuality of existence. we've the whole spectrum for the two genders. As for why men do no longer protest ... i assume they comprehend that this is basically the way issues are and protests are unlikely to alter something. wish this helps!

Two part answer
First, I think most people try to type fast so as to seem witty.
Second, more than likely, many of these offenders ARE third graders ;)
I think it's pretty obvious that you need not be an educated person nor an adult to own and operate a computer.
**I performed a spellcheck :)

Actually, even moderated print media shows a long slow decline into the abyss of spelling. Parents don't read with their children much these days and by the time they get to school it's too late.
Don't get me started on punctuation though...

I don't really know why that is. I have such a hard time reading "netspeak", though. I honestly can't make any sense of it and would love to see it abolished.

Being able to speak fluently does not guarantee one to be able to write just as efficiently.
Being able to pronounce a word does not mean one would definitely be able to spell it out. We learn to speak, by remembering the way words are pronounced, which means we learn by listening to sounds. Written words however, is learnt by remembering how a word is spelt. Therefore fluent speakers might not be able to spell correctly.

It's our education system. Read John Stossel's book - Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity. I tend to agree with him on this issue.

I think that it's not that they are lousy spellers; they just can't READ. You know, that little button that says "check spelling".
