Hi Zerg, my first apartment, when I was young and unmarried, was littered with roaches the size of my pinky finger. They were so scary. I feel you I really do. Here's what I did. This works. Start in your kitchen. Under the sink, if you have a small cut out hole, where the pipe goes through, put duct tape around that hole. Find any cracks, that are behind major appliances, and cover with duct tape. In your basement, do the same. Then, line the corners of your basement floor with boric acid. You can get it in a powder form. Just sprinkle it all over. It worked for me. I had the big ones that came from outdoors. Oh, and you have to clean your house like the Queen of England was coming to stay for a week. Spill food? Clean it up before going to bed. Trash is full? Take it out asap. Do you have the German roaches? Do you know the difference? Read this info that I found off the net.
Attachment:
The first step in eliminating roaches is to determine whether you have a problem with German Roaches or Large Roaches. German Roaches are what many people would identify as "water bugs" (because of their fondness for moist areas) or "kitchen roaches" (because that is where most infestations begin.) They prefer a warm, moist environment (your kitchen and bathrooms) and love to hitch a ride from your grocery store, flea markets, day care center, even your friend's home! Large Roaches, or what some people refer to as Palmetto bugs and "flying roaches", prefer a cool damp area (sewers, septic tanks, cellars and basements, mulch, etc...) and usually wander in from outdoors. Once you identify your problem, we'll show you the solution!
GERMAN ROACH ELIMINATION
To exterminate German Roaches we recommend you use either the clean-out method or baiting method. When we deliver the product of your choice, we will include written "how to" instructions to walk you through preparation, application and follow-up.
Clean-out Method: The pesticides used in a clean-out will also exterminate many other pests in homes, restaurants or other businesses. A roach clean out is usually implemented in locations where there is a very large roach population or when the roaches in the area have been identified as a group of roaches that are resistant to insecticides.
Basically, the clean-out procedure involves:
1) Residual pesticides: Spraying baseboards, underneath and behind appliances and in other areas where roaches frequent gives you the long term control that you need. Suggested products include Cynoff EC, Demon EC, Cypermethrin 4 ounce or Acephate Pro PCO. If you are spraying a restaurant or other commercial food handling establishment, you must use Acephate Pro PCO, Tempo SC, or Tempo WP.
2) Crack & crevice work: When dealing with a severe infestation, a residual pesticide alone will not exterminate the entire roach population. Using professional aerosols and/or dusts enables you to inject pesticides into the tiny areas where your target pests are hiding. This also helps to "flush out" pests, forcing them to enter areas you have treated with residual products. The best crack & crevice (C&C) residual aerosol for roaches on the market today is CB-Invader. For flushing action without a residual (for more sensitive areas, food handling appliances, etc.,) Pyrethrin Aerosols are the best.
Baiting Method: The best professional roach bait on the market today is Maxforce Gel. This product is available in a large syringe, making application simple and effective. The gel formulation enables you to place the material into cracks and crevices, appliances, pictures or clocks, in the corners of cabinets or any place where you suspect roaches are hiding. Each roach feeding on Maxforce will kill up to 40 other roaches via droppings and dead bodies. This "secondary kill" has a domino effect, eliminating up to ten generations of roaches with one simple application! To make roaches eat Maxforce faster, spray the area with Flea Fix IGR. Field studies have proven that roaches are driven to consume more bait in a shorter time period when exposed to growth inhibitors such as Flea Fix, Gentrol and Gentrol Point Source.
Roaches That Avoid Baits Contamination of Roach Baits
LARGE ROACH EXTERMINATION
There are several species of large roaches (including American Cockroach, Brownbanded Cockroach, Smoky Brown Roach, Oriental Roach) that are most often found outdoors but invade your home and become a major pest. They breed in any type of mulch (pine straw, bark, leaves), dead trees, wood piles or other organic material. Their harborage can also include sewers, landscape timbers, basements, driveway walls and attics.
Although they are not really a "large" roach, the Asian Cockroach is exterminated using the same basic roach control methods and products. For more about Asian roaches (or small flying roaches,) go to our Asian Cockroach article.
To exterminate other large roaches, use the following control methods:
Outside Spraying: Using a good residual spray such as Cynoff or Demon WP, spray a six foot swath all the way around the house and one foot up the foundation wall. You should also apply the pesticide to entry points such as windows, doors, plumbing, vents and weep holes. Spraying harborage areas such as rain gutters, hollow trees, mulch, tool sheds and retainer walls will complete your outdoor spraying.
Inside Spraying: Spray the inside where you have seen the roaches, paying special attention to areas where there is water. This includes the refrigerator, air conditioner, dishwasher, freezer, garage, laundry room and all plumbing.
Dusting: Dusts enable you to apply products in areas where insects are most likely to hide but where pets and humans are least likely to come in contact. Using Delta Dust in voids where roaches may hide or travel is an excellent pest management tool, killing many pests in the areas where spraying is difficult or hard to reach. Power dusting attics and/or crawlspaces with Delta Dust provides control for up to two years.
Baiting: In sensitive areas where you prefer to avoid the use of contact pesticides, use a professional bait such as Niban FG to eliminate roaches. Other baits available are Baygon Bait and Maxforce.

the problem of insects cannot be handled with just a particular method, one has to use a myriad of techniques to do it, some of them are-
1. first figure out, all the possible entry points of the cockroaches.
2. plug all the unwanted entry points in your home.
3. never litter food articles on the floor.
4. even polythene bags should be kept away from the floor or any reachable places (cockroaches are known to be able to digest paper and polythene)
5. clean the floor, kitchen and restroom with a good quality perfumed disinfectant.
6. use a powerful anti insect poisoned spray.
7. once you kill the insect with the spray, damage the insect physically and flush it down your toilet.(this is to make sure that they are dead)
8. use a different spray and disinfectant every 2 weeks.(cockroaches are good at developing resistance to a spray)
9. use anti coagulants in your drainage systems, so that they remain clean too.
10. finally there are certain types of valves used in drainage pipes, such that insects cannot walk in so look for such fittings in the nearest store.
best of luck!

I once lived in a house that was really infested with roaches. I got some "Combat Gel". As I was putting it down the roaches were coming out to eat the bait!!! It kills the roaches, and the ones that manage to live are left sterile, so they do not reproduce any more roaches. Within a month there were NO MORE ROACHES in that house, and they never came back!!! I lived there for many more years with no problems. I could not believe how well it worked! I will never use anything else.
It comes in a big syringe. You can put it in "out of the way" places where kids and pets can't get to it. I have never found anything that works like this stuff. I live in Texas, and there are lots of bugs here. This stuff is like magic!! Trust me!

If you don't have small children or pets, boric acid crystals seem to work. Just because you don;t see them everywhere doesn't mean they're not there. Sprinkle the crystals throughout your house and make sure you get as close to the walls as possible. If you can, fumigate the inside of the walls with one of the commercial bug bombs. None of this will work if you have an apartment because you can't get all areas.

Call a certified exterminator. Some of them guarantee that the pest will be gone and if it isn't they will come back and treat again. Cockroaches are very difficult, almost impossible to get rid of on your own. (been there done that) So Really, try an exterminator.

Ortho Home Defense Max.
I have personally bought two gallons of this stuff at walmart(although it is sold elsewhere) for 7/gal and sprayed my whole house along the baseboards... i have not seen one live bug in my house to date.. nor have i seen spiders which was my reason for spraying in the first place.
soak the crap outta the places where you think they come in at ...and it will continue to work.. its been nearly two months since ive sprayed and i sleep well at night still.
remember they hate light... keep this in mind. although light attracts about everyother bug... keeping a well lit area might help that problem.

I read that two table spoons of Tabasco to one quart of water in a spray bottle and applied to crevices around walls and cabinets will drive them away.
