Those are Roman Numerals, not Roman Alphabet.
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
M = 1,000

As for the Roman numerals the responder above is right;
M = 1000, C = 100 and L = 50.

The second site is a cool animation of how the letters evolve and when some were added.
