He doesn't have a body. All that's inside the armour is his soul, attached by Ed when Al lost his body to the Gate after their failed and chaotic attempt at human transmutation, to revive their dead mother. His body compensates for equivalent exchange, because to view the Gate you have to sacrifice something. For Al it's his body (although he doesn't remember seeing the Gate at all because he lost some of his memories too). For Ed it's his leg. Then Ed sacrificed his right arm to attach Al's soul to the armour, using a blood seal, knowledge he acquired from seeing the Gate.

Obviously you must not have caught the series from the beginning. As you may or may not know, Alphonse Elric is the younger brother of Edward Elric. When they were young their mother died of a mysterious illness. The Elric brothers devoted themselves to finding a way to use alchemy to bring their mother back to life. After some time, they found someone to teach them. When the brothers returned home they attempted to bring their mother back to life, but the cost was too great. Alphonse's body was absorbed into the alchemic spell, and Edward thinking quickly, attached Al's soul to a suit of armor that happened to be in their house. Also, in order to save Al's soul Ed had to sacrifice his arm and leg, which is why one of his arms and one of his legs is made of autometal.

He was transfigured into that body when Edward was trying to revive their mother. In essence, he is a soul, captured in a suit of armor withtout a body. He used to be in a human child's body, but the accident caused him to be that way. Which is why Ed and Al are after the philosophers stone. To get their lives back for each other.

ok we all know how he got there, but what else. Later in the series Al becomes the philosopher's stone. Then even later still, Ed makes the self sacrifice and Al is returned to his body--same age as he was when locked into the suit of armor. Can't wait for the movie in September!!

when their mother died they tried to bring her back but they had to lose sumtin of equal value so alphonse a.k.a. all ( like AL but with 2 l's) body disenagrated and his bigger brother lost his arm and leg, but the mother did not come back. With only his spirit left his bigger brother transfered it to the armor so he can use it like a body but feel no pain or needs no food but very stong, and they set off to find a stone to amplify thier power so they can finally bring her back, as far as i know they still have attempted it yet, but the movie comes out september 1st or 9th, my brains kinda dead right now so i cant remember.
neways glad i could help and its a very cool show u should keep watching.

there was an accident, and alphonse lost his body but his brain and heart, and his brother lost his heart, so everything is artifically replaced with machines. alphonse is still a kid.

his body is damaged in his trial to try the forbidden chemistry technique. so, his soul is absorbed into metal armour while his brother losts his hand.
