the throttle positioner "reads" how far you have the throttle opened, this is done by the resistance reading that it sends to the computer that controlls the fuel injection system, the farther you have the throttle opened the less resistance there is. A gasoline car needs about a 14-1 to fuel air ratio to burn properly, by "telling" the computer how far the throttle is opened it knows about how Much fuel to spray into the eng. Other sensors that also give the computer information on how much fuel to spray is, mass air flow sen. tempter sen. speed/rpm sen. manifold absolute pressure (vacuum) sen. detonation/knock sen. oxy. sen. and even altitude sen. to name a few. All of these variables are collected by the computer, which figures out just how much gas is needed to make the eng. run properly.

The TPS is a mechanical/electrical device that senses the position of the throttle pedal, that in turn tells the electronic fuel system to accelerate/decelerate or hold steady the flow of air/fuel. The driver applying pressure to the throttle peddle controls the action. If it fails, the engine will either not run or run very poorly.
