But sometimes i hear that GM vehicles aren't good quality. But i know so many people who have chevys with over 250,000 miles on them, and they're still running fine. no major engine or tranny work either. whats going on here? i think GM is pretty good quality. ford is another story, but GM is good. Does anyone out there know of these super-vehicles with all these miles on them? no stupid answers please.

GM has been the top Automaker for like forever. But Toyota is knocking on their heals hard lately.

Chevrolet's owner started out by selling racing parts to Ford and then started his own company and racing team beating Ford.

The fight has gone on since between the two.

I have had 8 Chevy Blazers in a row and past normal maintance I have had no problems with them. My father has been a GM man since he could drive and never had a major problem with any.

Dad did own one Ford but the engine litterally fell out while on the freeway. My first work truck was a Ford, was decent for about 6 months then it blew up the engine.

GM is fine....they had some quality issues in the 80's but so did every car maker. You just have to watch out for certain ones. Like these new Aveo's, they aren't GM but Kia products rebadged. The first generation Geo's were Suzuki's, but later turned into Toyota Corollas.

GM also recently had a deal on the table with Honda to put the Civic engine in the new Colbalt but then they choose an engine from their racing department.

Plus put a Honda Ridgeline image beside a Chevy Avalache image....shocking isn't it. GM assisted Honda with the truck.

There will always be cars in every make that run forever. Toyota statistically does better than GM, but that doesn't mean you should avoid GM.

Check out Consumer Reports for the data on repair history, etc. Also you should choose a car based on the reputation of the dealerships, i.e., when I lived in Detroit I hated owning a GM car because the dealerships always wanted to sell you new cars so getting repairs or maintenance done was very difficult.

I am close to 50 years old and I would be rich if I had a quarter for every time I heard a person say something bad about every make of vehicles. Fords are no good. Chevys are crap. Dodges are junk and so on. Come on people think about it. Vehicles are all good, and all brands and makes have their share of problems. Its very foolish to think that a certain make of a auto is anything but good. There are "lemons" in all of them. The majority of used vehicles that are talked bad about because of malfunctions is because the owners drive them like $hit and don't do much maintenance on them. Someday you youngins will see what I am talking about.......Whew, now I feel better..........(breathe)

It's usually the owner's driving habits that can dictate the life of a car. If you don't hot rod around and avoid jackrabbit starts, it could last as long as you need.

Keeping up with preventative maintenance, and oil changes will prolong your engine's life and help keep you from being stranded.

I owned a 1991 Chevy Cavalier for several years, and racked 255,000 miles on the odometer before I decided that the body rusting out was making it unsafe to drive. Still, I drove it to the junkyard, pulled the battery, collected my money and said goodbye to one of the most reliable cars I've ever driven.

Problem with many US made vehicles are lack of consistancy. Simply put, if you get a good one, it lasts without problems. If you get a bad one, it won't. This is true for GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

I believe this is why you have people who swear by them, and people swear at them.

After many years manufacturing cars, none of those companies seem to be able to maintain consistant quality cars coming out of their factories.

Been through most American vehicles and I have found GM has lowest parts cost and highest parts availability! GM is first on my list! As far as foreign goes, be prepared to cash in your childrens college fund for repairs!

my father and my brother own a tranny shop and have been mechanics for along time.....and one drives a toyota truck and the other a ford truck and they both love them and back them up....personally any vehicle that is computer controlled is a piece of s^&*! i like older vehicles they are more dependable.....not controled by a computer....by the way anything new is computer controled....very exspensive and undependable... and both my brother and father agree with what i feel...that is why their vehicles are early models...by the way i worked in the shop for 7 years...not completely stupid when it comes to vehicles......

I specailize in older antique cars, I cant say I have one with a trillion miles, but a car can only be as good as the way it is treated. Be nice to most any car, whichever brand and It will be good to you.

it depends on the model of car, they say never buy a car that was made on a friday or monday, and stay away from new models of cars for a year or 2 so they work out the bugs. you get what you pay for.
