The only time that I haven't adopted a dog is when I needed the for a certain purpose. I have thought about buying a purebred great Pyrenees to protect my sheep. They need to be trained from a puppy and it is very hard to find a great Pyrenees to adopt let alone a puppy. Otherwise I am a big supporter of adopting dogs. Most of the dogs that I have had have been dogs that someone else did not want. Many have been from friends or friends of friends who lived in the city and had a dog that would do better in the country.

I have had many different pets............. hamster, parrot, horses, dogs, cats, squirrels, snakes, skunks, caymen ect. Some have been from breeders, pet shops, orphaned and adopted rescues. Truth is there are bad apples in every bunch. I have seen adopted animals abandoned again. So while adoption is stupendous it doesn't work for everyone. There are so many factors to consider when getting a pet. Do you need a pure bred for a specific reason? Do you want a baby to raise and train? Or you would prefer an older animal that is trained and more mellow? What environment will the animal be in? Where is this pet available? There are LOTS of people who don't mind telling you where you should get one with out knowing anything about you or what would work for you. To me the best answer is research so you can make an informed decision.

I've bought pets from pets stores and I've adopted pets. Some critters are not available in my area as rescues so that's why I buy from a store or breeder. There's almost no green cheek conures in rescues in Canada and those in bird sanctuaries can't be adopted because I live out of Provence and the rescue won't ship. If I can, I prefer to adopt or go to a breeder, but I have to admit - a really good pet store is better than a lot of breeders and rescues out there. You always hear about the bad pet shops when there's just as many GOOD ones out there. Ones who question buyers about the pet and won't sell if someone is a doofus. One of my favorites always makes sure that they don't take birds off someone who buys pets from pets stores and breeds them for profit. They may not be perfect, but they try to be the best store they can be.

Im an adoption girl. I dont no why people buy (expecially from pet stores) when their are so many animals out there with no homes. I got a purebred white husky from the shelter and he was abused. I also got a mutt who was about to go to the shelter and they dont have any behavior probs at all. My friend got a dog from a breeder and she has had lots of behavior problems. I would foster but my parents said no because we dont have the space. But anyone who buys has never seen an animal who has been abused about to be put to sleep for things they cant help. If you are set on a purebred of a certain breed thats fine, my huskys registered, shelters have purebreds and there are tons of breed rescues out there and lots of puppys too. If you are a buyer please just go to a shelter and look at all the dogs and cats that need help and could be killed if people dont stop irrisponsible breeding, breeders, and petstores and remember getting a pet from them and not breeders could help dogs and cats being killed for things they couldnt help.

I would only adopt, especially with all the purbred rescues out there--now you can even adopt if you're looking for a purebred!

IF there were no suitable dogs in rescue, then I might consider a legitimate breeder.

STAY AWAY from backyard breeders (especially the ones who advertise in the newspapers), and pet shops (except for small animals)--even if the pet shop claims the puppies/kittens are from responsible breeders, there's no guarantee.

Fortunately, in our area we have both PetCo and PetSmart, neither of which sell puppies and kittens--they hold adoption events, instead.

I got my dogs from the Humane Society, and they are wonderful pets. They are so grateful to have a loving home. Some people, however, are stuck on certain breeds, and they only want that pure bred dog/cat for their pet. Also some people are afraid that a dog at a rescue shelter may have been abused and be dangerous. That is their reasoning. Silly, I know.

My heart broke the last time I was at the SPCA. The only pets I have bought from a pet store were hamsters and fish. All 4 of the cats have had and 2 of those I still have were not from the SPCA but I feel just as good getting them from friends and from the news paper. If I had room and money I would foster SPCA animals to give them a better chance of being adopted to hopefully a loving home.

We have always adopted our animals from the shelter. I wouldn't dare buy a puppy from the pet store...only idiots do that. Our best dogs came from the pound, and we get that feel good feeling of saving the dogs life.

Adopt Adopt Adopt! Store pets are usually breeded in puppy mills and have a host of health issues. Plus why would someone support puppy mills when there are so many other animals that need good homes?
