I'm an English bloke that happens to live in Canada. I have played a lot of football (soccer) in Canada and England. The first thing is that ice hockey is very big in Canada because of the climate and history but I have seen a decline in registration for hockey, reason being it is so expensive, soccer registration is on an increase, but still the youth that I have worked with at soccer camps have heroes such as Beckham, Ronaldo, and Owen. I think until Canadian players are household names soccer can never really compete with hockey. Soccer in Canada needs T.V. revenue and a good professional league, then good Canadian players like Owen Hargreaves may stay instead of moving to Europe. Also you must remember that in other countries soccer is really the only game in town where as in Canada you not only have hockey but baseball, basketball and Canadian football. I think it will be a long time before Canada can genuinely compete in world soccer.

Because Canada isnt a soccer sport, but come one 83rd, thats not bad, its over the top half. there are some 215ish countries in FIFA so actally not bad. Sure you wont make the world cup for a while, but that happens to all countries, seriously, the US had onyl been in 7, and we are improving.

And look at it like this, Canada and Russia have Hockey, the US Football (not football), and the rest of the world has soccer (football)

Soccer is an easy and fun game to play. That is why it is popular with youth in Canada. However, there is a huge difference between playing sports and professional sports. Few people are going to spend huge amounts of time getting really good at something if there isn't a pay off. In Canada/US... the professional money is in football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. They professional leagues (NFL, CFL, NBA, MLB, etc.) simply have the billions to drive advanced athletes into those sports. This in-turn has junior, college, university, etc. leagues, and then down to high school and others. It's fine playing soccer in Canada, but... sometime in your teens you need to move onto something which has some type of payoff. If you are a young teen athlete in Canada... your chances of earning a living playing soccer are almost nil. If you are that good... you go to Europe. Meanwhile, there are 127 junior-A hockey teams, hundreds of other teams, plus of course a possibility at the NHL. Same with baseball, basketball, or football. If you are good, you can earn a living. If you are great, you can become rich. This is the reverse in Europe and Asia. There are few professional sports leagues besides soccer. As such, while basketball or hockey might be fun to play... the money is in soccer. By the time you reach your mid-teens... if you want to make a career is sports in Europe... soccer is it. If you are really good in hockey or basketball... you move to North America.

I think in the next 10-15 years you'll see canada become more of a "soccer" nation. Hockey is becoming very very expensive, and even the little kids hockey is overly competative. Now many communities are building big sport complexes with indoor pitches. Everyone I know that has kids, have them in soccer and they love it. So it will come...eventually.

Well... Canada is still better than a lot of other countries. At least the players play with their heart and won't think they are the superstars...

Maybe most athletes in Canada choose for Hockey... baseball and basketball nowaday!

FIFA rankings are often misleading and in soccer anything can happen. Brazil was ranked #1 and they didn't even make it to the semi-finals. It would not be inconceivable for Canada to do well in future World Cups.
