The clue to THIS question is the phrase "of their days". In fact, both Mozart and Beethoven were seen as "exteme" by the older generation and oftentimes when they were first coming out with their music publicly they were considered "outrageous" and "strange". There are even claims that parents at first did not allow their children to listen to Mozart and Beethoven because they were "different" than what the norm was in "those days". However, BECAUSE of the intensity and newness of their music the younger generations began to follow. {Beethoven was a follower of Mozart and took from Mozart's style when he was very young before he began to add his own personal touches}
Just like many of the "pop stars" today, Mozart and Beethoven seemed to have many lovers even though they were really not that handsome.....isn't it funny that musicians ALWAYS get the girl?! Also, both were apparently drinkers and had health issues concerning their drinking that only a few knew about at the time.
Mozart died young and extremely ill. He was forgotten soon and only LATER became as popular as we think of him today. Beethoven managed his money much better and died a rich but unhappy ill man. He was treated like royalty during his funeral.
I'm not sure about Chopin and Strauss. Mozart and Beethoven just happen to be my favorite composers so I know some of their bios. Were they pop stars of their days? From what I've read about them....I would say YES!

Yup,
a "pop star" is a POPular artist, the spread of music back then was not as broad as it is now think radio, Cd's, MP3 & internet.
But for the time they were probally the most well know.

It depends on if they were popular during their time. That's all a pop star is. You might want to make sure that they were popular before they died. Some artists' popularity occurs after death. Then, they are pop stars after their time.

Well techinically no, i believe no because still in their days their music they played and made was known as classical music because it has so much drama and emotion mentally in the music pop music is really just words that rhyme sometimes they mean something of a happening but usually it's just words that rhyme or a meaning that really didnt happen in that type of music in my opinion but if you think so that's your opinion.

Yes popstar but not as we know it! Popstars of then wrote kickass songs that people still listen to now. Popstars of now "sing" songs others wrote for them that people can't get out of their head then in a day they are extremely annoyed by it!
I wonder if back in those times they had underground composers that don't want to be discovered like underground bands now.
