He should be in the hall as a player but should not be allowed to manage/coach again.

He's served his time, paid his dues, whatever. He's also the all-time hit leader in baseball. And he's also something like 67 years old now - let him in the Hall of Fame where he belongs.
Everyone keeps on going on about how great Barry Bonds is and how he's a sure-fire first ballot inductee (God help us!) and his using steroids - if indeed he did and the evidence would indicate such to be the case - is a far worse offense than Pete Rose's gambling. And at least Rose only bet on his own team to win - never to lose.
It's time to let him into the Hall while he's still able to enjoy the fame and glory that goes with it. How can they not include the man who got more hits than anyone else? Its ridiculous.

There is no question that he belongs in the Hall of Fame. He is the all time leader in hits. What he did as a manager was wrong. Don't put him in as a manager.
The Hall of Fame is full of questionable characters. One allegedly killed his stepfather. Many others gambled on baseball. Some had legal problems regarding drugs. Others beat their wives.
Let's not kid ourselves. If the Hall was just for good characters, it would probably only be half full. When I went to the Hall and saw all those plaques, I read of remarkable accomplishments. It was what the players did "BETWEEN THE LINES", not what they did outside of them.
The Hall of fame would not be tarnished by having Pete Rose in, however, IT IS TARNISHED BY NOT HAVING HIM IN! And,let's also induct Shoeless Joe Jackson - along with his bat, "Black Betsy".

Many have made the argument that Rose should be in because his gambling on baseball was "no big deal." In terms of society, gambling is not worse that wife beating or drug abuse. However, gambling is a greater crime against baseball. It undermines the integrity of the game whether Rose bet against his team or not. He was still dealing with gamblers who could react to the way Rose placed bets (i.e. he never bet on the Reds when Bill Gullickson pitched).
Being guilty of baseball's first comandment earned Rose a lifetime ban. The horrible way he mishandled the situation by denying it constantly and then only admitting it to sell books killed any chance he had of getting the ban lifted.
He did not go to prison for gambling, he went to prison for income tax evasion. Those who say he served his time are wrong. Baseball didn't have him locked up.
Yes, Rose is the all-time hits leader. He was a great player. I think he should get into the Hall of Fame after he dies. Give him his recognition, but deny him his celebration. Remember his ban is a lifetime ban. His lifetime isn't over yet.

The Hall of Fame is not truly the Hall of Fame without the All-Time hits leader. He should be in the Hall for his ON THE FIELD accomplishments. It's a travesty that while his belongings are in the Hall, Pete himself isn't.

MLB is being hypocritical. Pete is not banned from baseball for gambling, he is banned because he pissed off the establishment. I think ESPN should do (unless they already did) a "top 5 reasons you can't blame Pete Rose" show.
1. Gambling is a disease
2. He paid his dues by going to jail
3. He apologized
4. He played the way the game should be played
5. He is the greatest player of all time
If Ty Cobb can be in the hall of fame, so can Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Put him in. take it from a Reds fan who knows. What he did off the field was a mistake. he has agreed to that and he said he takes full responsibility for it. But what he did off the field dosent have a damn thing to do with what he did on the field. Its sad that Pete Rose has to pay the admission to the Baseball hall of fame just to see the ball that he smacked to break Ty Cobb's record. Its been long enough, let by gones be by gones. Pete should be in the Hall, and he deserves to be in the hall. And the sooner Mr. Selig sees that, the closer we'll be to this game getting right. GO REDS!

Half the people that responded to this question think that he deserves to be in the HOF, because they are under the false impression that what he did (gamble on baseball, then LIED about it), he did after he was out the game or on his free time. WRONG!!! He did all these things while playing, coaching, managing, and whenever the opportunity presented itself.
If Shoeless Joe Jackson can't get in, who by all accounts was 10 times the man that Pete Rose was, then Rose hopefully in my lifetime NEVER is inducted.
Ty Cobb was a piece of **** as people go, but he played the game the way it was meant to be play. If he did anything that could have disgraced the game, he was never caught. In today's game, yes. Back then, no. Making excuses for him, no. Just the sign of the times. He did not bet on baseball!
Mickey Mantle was an alcoholic who lost prime playing years, because of his addiction. He did not bet on baseball!
Roberto Clemente's bust does not deserved to be tarnished by one of Rose next to his. He did not bet on baseball!
I grew up a Phillies fan. I cheered Charlie Hustle when he played for the Phils. He is the all time hits leader in a sport I love, but PETE ROSE BET ON BASEBALL!!!

My take on pete rose is well documented.
He's a whinny little crybaby who DOES NOT DESERVE OR BELONG IN THE HALL OF FAME! NOT EVEN AS A PAYING CUSTOMER!!!
There is absolutely excuse for what he did...he damaged the game of baseball by gambling---and just gambling; but betting on his own team while he managed them.
He denied it...but signed an agreement to a lifetime ban form baseball (which should include mention of his "so-called" records).
Now he admits to doing it---only to promote his book?
The man is a weasel! And has no business crying for our support.
I truly hope he never he is allowed in the hall of fame.
He should be ashamed of himself!

No. He gambled, got caught, lied about it, then finally told the truth to sell books. Rose is a scumbag and should never be allowed into the hall.
Just to be clear, as a player he deserves to be in the HOF, but he was selfish even then. He continued to play for several years when he was hurting his team. He was the worse 1B in baseball for his last five years. He stayed so he would break Ty Cobb's record.
Imagine how hated Barry Bonds would be if he played for five more years, while hurting his team, in order to pass Hank Aaron. That is the same thing Rose did.
Pete Rose is an embarrassment to baseball and humanity. He should never be allowed into the HOF.

Peat Rose does belong in the hall of fame . Yes he bet on baseball and lied but...Their is no proof he ever affected the outcome of a game right...Barry Bonds used Steroids and lied and affected the outcome of games so how can you put in one and not the other ? for that matter Shoeless Joe Jackson need to be in the hall too . you can't put Bonds in and not the others too .
