According to Islam when people die they stay in their graves until the day of judgement. A good person, one who believes in the Creator, worshipped only Him, and did good in his life will live at peace. The opposite will live in his grave in agony. At the final moment the horn will be blown by Israfil and all the living shall die. Angel Israfil will blow the horn again and all will come alive again and that will begin the moment of Judgement Day. Those who are of heaven will be given their books with their right hand and the opposite for the opposite.
Islam does not believe in souls roaming or ghosts or those things. All the souls go in a place to rest until the Day of Judgement. What people call ghosts are actually a third creature Allah made before humans and after angels called Jinns. They can take on many forms, human and animal. They can travel in between the worlds sort of like the angels can. They can take on the appearance of people (why people think the dead has come back).

The Bible says that Jesus will come with a shout and with the voice of the archangel and the trump of God and every eye will see Him. And the dead in Christ shall rise first, then we, which are alive and remain, shall rise to meet them in the air.
If people went to heaven or hell when they died there wouldn't be a resurrection. The Bible talks all the way thru about the resurrection.
Besides, if God is a just God--and He is--why would he be burning Cain for 6,000 years longer than he would be burning Hitler? All Cain did was hit his brother and kill him. True that is murder, but not as heinous as what Hitler did. Hell is punishment.
The place to start deciphering it is to study 'hell.' Hell is going to happen. It isn't happening now. "Hell" is going to be when Christ purifies this unholy, sinful earth, so that He can make a 'new heaven and a new earth.'
Sin cannot exist in the presence of a holy God, so the earth will be purified by fire. Satan will go with it because he is the perpetrator of all sin. And any people who hold on to sin will be consumed by the brightness of His (Jesus) coming. Their sin will be destroyed and if they're holding on to it, they'll go, too.

If you have trusted that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins then you will go to be with Lord when you die. 2 Corinthians 5: 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. When the Lord returns for the church, then we will meet Him in the air and then we will stand at the judgment seat of Christ not to answer for our sins, because the Lord's blood was shedd for our sins, but to see if we will be receive rewards The ones that have rejected what the Lord Jesus Christ done for them on the cross will go to hell and wait until after the 1000 reign of Jesus Christ on the earth. Then there will be a white throne come down from heaven and all those in hell will be judged and then cast into the lake of fire. .Revelation 20: 11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. Revelation 20: 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Revelation 20: 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20: 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20: 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

If you are a Christian you go to be with Jesus and if you're not you go to the place of the dead which is called hell while you await your appearance at the white throne judgment.
Philippians 1:22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this to me will mean fruit from my labor; and what I shall choose I do not know. 23 For I am hard pressed by the two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better.
Revelation 20:11 Then I saw a great white throne and He who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled. And no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened the books. And another Book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged by the things having been written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to their works. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death, the Lake of Fire. 15 And if anyone was not found having been written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of Fire.

Well, being brought up as a Catholic...when you died your soul went to Purgatory. Kind of like Limbo. That's where it will stay until Judgment Day comes. I am now a Southern Baptist. I don't know what to think now that you mention it. It says in the Bible that on Judgment Day the graves will give up their dead. Maybe our soul remains with our body until called for Judgment.

Could be that time is something only the living are constricted to.
When you wake up from surgery, the time you were out doesnt
exist. Could it be that after you croak, the judgement day will be
instantanious for you? When Christ told the thief "today you will be with me in paradise", even eons later it will still be today for him. Earthly years have no meaning at all for those who have escaped the constrictments of "life".

If I died this minute I'd be sound-my karmic slate is well in credit, in fact I probably have a surplus of good karma. No honest person ever went to hell regardless of their beliefs.

HELL AS YOU KNOW IS A FABRACATION MADE UP BY MEN. HELL IN THE BIBLE IS IN FACT MEANS ((( THE GRAVE ))) COMES FROM THE HEBREW WORD (((SHOEL ))) WHICH MEANS ((( THE GRAVE ))
IN FACT GOING TO HEAVEN ALSO IS A FABRACATION MADE UP BY MEN. THOSE WHO OBEY GOD NOW WILL BE RESURRECTED ON THE GREAT DAY THAT JESUS RETURNS AND THOSE WHO DON'T OBEY WILL BE RESURRECTED 1000 YEARS AFTER THAT. THEY THEN WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO KNOW GODS WAYS. HERE IS MY PROOF:
1jo 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Ga 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Ga 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Ga 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Ro 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Ro 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Ro 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Ro 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Ro 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Ro 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Re 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Re 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Re 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
Re 2:28 And I will give him the morning star.
Joh 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him
1000 YEARS ON EARTH WITH CHRIST
Re 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Re 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Re 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
