Most never get another home. Millions are wondering the streets and Millions more are killed every year by animal control dept. for cities. This is a real shame and should be a crime to abandon a pet.
This is why I agree with mandatory chip tagging of all pets. Then when they are caught, after being abandoned, the owners can be found and prosecuted.

Unfortunately far too many, and in pounds and at the RSPCA (Australian animal shelter), cats are less likely to be rehomed than dogs. Someone told me the other day that at the RSPCA, they euthanase every 2nd kitten as a matter of course, although I have no idea if this is really true.
There are a heap of No Kill shelters that will rehome animals that are not too old or too sick, although the definition of too sick is a matter of question, many will put down kittens with cat flu or ring worm, but the good ones will keep these until they are better and then adopt them out.
If you are in Australia, and you are looking to adopt animals from No Kill shelters, in Sydney, there is Monika's DoggieRescue.com, the Animal Welfare League or CatRescue to name but a few.

It is a really serious problem. Those poor babies will only have a slim chance of getting another home in MS. I don't know of any link other than to go to the national humane societies web site.

too many. a neighbor of mine rescued a syrian hamster from the garbage at a local strip mall where I used to live, she was badly beaten up and would have died there in the hot summer sun she she hadn't been brought home to me. She only lived a few months after I got her, but I loved her every day until the day she died.
If I had room and money I would foster spca animals to help give them a second chance, but unfortunately I have neither.

It is a fact-thousands of companion animals are lost by loving families each year.
Some are found in a matter of hours, some return after several weeks while sadly, others are never seen by those who love them again.

You know animals are the most down to earth people I know. They love you no matter what. It is cruel to abandon mans best friends. People could learn from animals

When I started volunteer at the SPCA they told us that close to 70% of their population never get new homes.
Look up SPCA
PETA might have stats. Beware they are very biased.

3 - 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year. That's about half of what enters shelters. Check out http://www.hsus.org/ace/11830. Pretty sad, isn't it?
