Well have you heard of the show Myth-busters? They actually tested your question. The results: Windows up if your driving above 55-60 mph but windows down to save gas if driving at lower speeds. As for the truck and the tailgate part. Always tail gate up. It creats a vortex of sorts in the bed of the truck and reduces friction or something.

Air conditioner saves a little bit more on gas. The windows down make it resistant so it has to drive harder , which uses more fuel.
Not sure on the tail gate. Maybe if it was down it'd save more gas, cause there is nothing there for the wind to push against.

I actually heard on the news that using your air conditioner uses less gas because when you have the windows down, it puts a lot of pressure in your car. Just like the tail gate being down saves gas because of the air pressure

Let's start with some basics. The ac unit on a vehicle is run by a belt. It puts extra drag on your engine components. Thereby taking more gas to keep your pistons moving. Window down will allow natural air folw. Wether you save gas or not depends on more factors. What kind of driving are you doing?????? Are the roads fairly straight and flat, or is there alot of hills to climb? Are you in town or on the open road. The more stop and go driving you are doing, the more gas. Hence widows down saves. If it is up and down hills and mountains, it is also windows down. The constant climbing causes the engine to work harder. If you add AC to this........ If you are on a fairly staight stretch, it is probably going to be a toss up. At that point, go with comfort. Tail gate up or down???? Depends some on weather conditions. NO strong winds, either. Strong winds I would say down.

The t.v. program "MythBusters" proved that you save a slight bit by leaving the a.c. off and opening a window. About tailgates, I drive with mine down and save a little. (I have been driving 76 miles to and from work. Luckily that job is over and another starts soon.) About the latter, I've heard that when the tailgate is closed moving air just basically flows over the air in the bed and thus the tailgate doesn't catch wind. I think that is probably but not entirely true so I drive with my tailgate down.

I think it has to be:

on the highway use the ac
in the city it's windows down
and if you want to be really efficient,
wind up the windows and turn off the ac

thats the old saying along with:

the tail gate can be put down,
sure but,
your not gonna see your load!

Of course the windows down saves gas..... But in the city limits only....

And on an expressway or a freeway the AC on consumes less gas. Because the windows down puts more pressure on your car and ultimately your engine, which consumes more gas....

Windows down for sure. AC is a device that takes more than electrical power aka gas. Just leave your tailgate up, driving a pick up truck isn't like Nascar...precise aerodynamics don't matter.

I read an actual study on this once and at higher speeds, air conditioner uses less energy. I believe the speed was around 40mph.

They say to drive with your windows up and your AC off...take the tailgate off and put on a net...
