Windows XP may not be the best thing for you to do. Even though a system may meet the minimum requirements for XP it may not run very well. If your system is several years old, think twice about doing this. For the amount the full version will cost you at most retailers you can probably almost buy the Dell systems advertised on tv. Think I saw $399 lately.
Minimum system requirements for XP
PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
•
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
Your system:
400 MHz Intel Celeron processor with MMX Technology
RAM (standard) 48 MB SDRAM standard
Maximum 256 MB (2 x 128 MB DIMM)
Speed 66 MHz synchronous
Sockets Two 168-pin DIMMs
Size 16, 32, 64, and 128 MB DIMMs
Unfortunately your system jsut barely meets the minimum system requirements. The cost to purchase new sdram (getting rare and price is going up) and to purchase WinXP will put you close to the Dell I mentioned earlier.
Hope this helps.

m8 with that spec it's time to upgrade the entire system.
your system will be at a crawl with XP and less than a 256MB pc100 sdram.
you need to contact www.hp.com for the details of the exact requirements of that system.
but seriously a total system upgrade (motherboard CPU, RAM and a good quality graphics card are essential) you can keep the rest of your current hardware. see www.dabs.com for hardware spec and current uk prices.
my amd sempron 3400 with 3GB pc2700 SD ram, radeon 9550 256MB GPU with drives running at 7200RPM is often slow under windows XP. so my guess yours would be so slow the upgrade would not be worth while.
and a little tip you only need to upgrade the ram ta accomodate the total ammount of programs your running at the same time this will not speed up your system on it's own.
A pentium 3 or above or equivelent is essential with a minimum of 1GB ram for just the basics (your operating system, the antivirus software you run, your internet browser, and your IM clients like skype messenger from msn and yahoo etc to name just a few. you should also increase to 2GB ram if you wish to play DVDs without any problems, and if you want a tv card to run with instant replay then a dedicated drive for PVR preferable a SATA interface should be used and your ram should be set to 3GB if running pc2700 sdram, you may get away with less ram if the ram is running faster.

Yes it will accept the faster ram but it may not be any faster due to restrictions of your motherboards bus speed. More is always better but again it depends on how much ram your motherboard can support. You should email HP mentioning your model number to get more precise information. Good luck!
