Okay, here's the game plan. This may cause you to be castigated, but..
I would suggest instead of agonizing over it, talk to her, find out what he's like with her, but be yourself, and talk to her about him. She may be keeping him, only because she don't wanna look, anymore.
Just be careful, fate always needs a little help. She may actually be your best route to this lad.
