A fantastic idea would be to work with your school counselor to see if there are any internship positions available in accounting. I worked for Ernst & Whinney (at the time that was their name) and it was a blast. Accountants are very cool people! Every intern we had ended up getting several job offers when they were getting ready to graduate from college. If you are interning and you find you do not like the work, it is not that much of a problem to switch your major into a different line of study, but once you graduate that is a little bit stickier!

There are endless different types of jobs you can go into with an accounting degree. I've had 3 jobs since I graduated 7 years ago. The first one was in accounting information systems auditing at a big accounting firm - it was ok. The second was with a medium accounting firm, I did audits, tax, and internal audits - loved tax, HATED the audit stuff enough that I threatened to quit if I had to keep doing it. The current one is a small/medium accounting firm, I do tax and business valuation work and like both. There are also tons of non public accounting jobs you could get. So there's really no way to know without getting at least some experience and idea of which type(s) of accounting work a job involves. Try to get a part time job and/or as many internships as you can and talk to people in accounting.

I agree with bubbleapple, if you like math, then you will love accounting. I have taken two accounting courses in college so far, and I have enjoyed them, but I struggled with it. If you don't mind headaches or going over figures a million times to find that one itty bitty error, then you'll fit right in! As some of the others have suggested, just try a course or two at college and see if you like it...if not, drop the course and pursue something else.

If you can handle hours of concentration with critical attention to detail, like numbers, don't mind working alone or with another equally absorbed person, can handle bad ventilation (helps when checking audit files in storage areas!), and many, many bad jokes about your profession you may find it very rewarding.
Considering that the career is fairly sedentary, are you physically active in your leisure time? You'll need to have the ability to motivate yourself to exercise and undue what the work desk has done to you.
Good Luck

are you good at math, like working with numbers, like solving problems, are you meticulous/perfectionist, are you detail oriented, are you organized, do you like sitting at a desk, do you like to read to keep yourself up to date on new accounting and IRS practices...just some questions to ask yourself...if you become a CPA, you can earn a good salary. Good luck to you!
