In an article in Glamour magazine in 1968, the author described Twiggy, Cheryl Tiegs, Verushka, Jean Shrimpton and fifteen other top models as "supermodels".

Dorothy Horan aka Dovima, Carmen Dell'Orifice, Lisa Fonssagrives, Dorian Leigh, Cathee Dahmen, Suzy Parker, Mary Jane Russell, Susanne Erichsen, Inga Lindgren, Elise Daniels, Sunny Harnett, China Michado , Jean Patchett, Betty Borosner, Sunny Harnett, Saundra Keays, and Uschi Obermeier are often considered the world's first renowned models. These girls were the top fashion models at the time. These models were highly paid, from up to $40 an hour. Dorian Leigh and her younger sister Suzy Parker (who both began in the 1940s) both earned an annual salary of $300,000, and are often credited as the pioneer "supermodels".

During the 1970s more supermodels continued to rise to fame. One of the very famous supermodels during this era was Janice Dickinson, who by many, claim is the "World's First Supermodel."

That's a very general question. In general "super"models are paid quite well. But they are also under high demands for not only their looks but daily life as well. As for models, most don't make much.

A female by the name of ZOOK in 12,300 BC --The first female on record as using a turtle shell helmet to avoid being claimed by a man---there were stories left in stone that hinted that she might have been gay----she used to model skins by the Tiberus River and cavemen would come from miles around and would bring berries and bear meat for admission---they would stand for hours and watch while ZOOK shook
