Hey,
I know, I'm sorry! Okay, well I have the same problem. I am going on a trip next week, and the problem is: it's the week I'm going to be on my period. Sucks, huh. Well I am going to be swimming too, on my trip, and I've only worn a tampon once, and it was at my friend's party. But before I go on my trip, I am going to buy more tampons. Ones that are the slim/junior kind, because the other ones hurt, lol!
But my friends who use tampons have told me that if it hurts, it's not in all the way. So grab a new tampon (Obviously :]) and try pushing it farther up. And yeah when I tried first, it hurt like hell! I tried a few times, though. But yes, like "mtlfearie" said go this website because I looked and it helps, a lot. It shows how to insert a tampon:

Can you get your mom to explain it to you? I guess not or you wouldn't be asking. If it hurt, it's probably not in all the way. The tampon itself should not be poking out of the vagina. Just the string. The first time you put one in, try this. Put one leg up on the toilet, spread your labia, Place the tip of the tampon at the vagina, and push the end of the tube applicator where the string is coming out. Push it in far enough so that it doesn't feel uncomfortable, but the string is still out. Make sure you change your tampon every few hours or you could end up with Toxic Shock syndrome, which can be deadly. You also might try buying a slimmer tampon if they are still uncomfortable. They are less absorbant, but they may feel better to you.

Several have answered it well here, so I won't tell you how, but if it hurts, you may not put it in far enough, or in my case, there is just a few brands I can use. Tampax Pearls is one I can use, and most of the others, are too long or something. So if it hurts, keep trying other ones until you find your brand. Good luck!

Get a fireplace poker to help shove it in. Make sure the string is on the side going in first.

thats how i first tried one on!!! i was sooooo
scared ...what you do is you have to stick it in this hole type thing in you vagina vertically and the reason it hurts is because
you rip through a layer of skinbut after that, its all good.
you might cry and there will be extra blood.
hope it helps..or, you could jus ask your mom.

you need the slimmer ones and gentle glide. If it hurts could be because you are to young to wear a tampon.....and arent sexually active....Also why would she throw the box away.....? unless it was the last one in the box.

I'd look it up on the Internet for a visual aid. It should never hurt though.
