Hi Matty. Yes, many dreams that we have are significant, and they can have different purposes. I encourage people to write down their dreams as soon as they wake up. Some dreams may have great significance to our lives once we understand them. Dreams can help explain our destiny, point out areas of our lives that need correction, encourage us, give direction, tell us about future events, provide warnings... Some very famous compositions, inventions, and other creations actually came to people in dreams.

I'm one of the interpreters at this site:

Some say that your dreams are the information that the subconscious part of your mind has taken in over the past 34 hours...and that your dreams are that all mixed up in a dream. Some think they have purpose and meaning and if you pay attention to them you can learn about things that have happened and you didn't understand are that will happen. Some say that dreams are the minds way of dealing with the emtional affects of that day. Dreams are still being studied today for no one really knows why we dream or why we dream what we do.

I've lookind a lot into my dreams, read couple books. I love dreaming, most of the time I enjoy them, like a little movie while I sleep and also lets me know I've slept enough. I also sleep with a Lapus Lazuli, a stone which makes dreams more vivid and memorable. Most dreams are your subconcious mind going over things in your day, some people claim to have had premonitions from thier dreams. Strong symbols are supposed to have meaning, site below is pretty good. I wouldn't take these as gospel though ;)

Some people believe dreams are random electrical impulses and the "story" we see is just the mind's way of making sense of meaningless stimuli; others think dreams are the subconscious mind "telling" the conscious mind things. Either way, the messages you see through dream interpretation will have meaning to you (either it's an inkblot or it's a photo, but you can see a butterfy in both).
I have found a lot of meaning in my dreams, and self-examination (through dream interpretation or otherwise) is generally a helpful thing. Recurring themes or dreams are the most meaningful, and an argument for the "message" theory.

We dream because our brains are always active. We are almost always dreaming as a matter of fact. We only remember them occasionally. I believe that some dreams are in fact our brains computing various scenarios of situations and future events. Have you ever had the feeling of Deja Vu or that you had dreamed something and then it happened. Cool huh.

Two theories, 1) it is the brains form of organizing information, deciding what is relevant and clearing what isn't, kinda like housekeeping. 2) The soul joins with other souls and spirits on a different plane of existence and they have out of body adventures...

The dreams are significant because they generally bring to the surface issues that are stored in the unconscious mind

That is true, and I think helpful on your part, but I think the answer your searching for pertains to the question of a dream's random pictures and strangeness. When you have a dream, most of the time, it makes little sense and is difficult to connect to any truth in your daily life. You see, when you are fully aware, and have a greater control over your sub-conscious, you think more clearly and normally. (I hope.) When you are asleep, your mind is free to roam amd wonder. Your conscious inter-twines with your memory and your thoughts and creates images unlike what is familiar to daily life. Just as a creative artists do with a canvas, we do with our minds. Some people believe in a paranormal view of dreams,(hence their mystery and strangeness), but I believe that we are more creative than we think. As far as their significance, I think you can understand yourself more deeply, and discover hidden talents and imagination through them. It just goes to show that all of us are movie makers and artists on the inside.

you dream, because of the subconscious never sleeps, and all of the things that go on in our daily life and always being thought of even while you sleep. many people believe that one can interpret dreams as signs of things to come, but it is your brains way of dealing with things we choose not to deal with or stumped on. The brain is still the most complex computer inthe world...even big blue does not come close

Dreams are the most important things we have becase they express our fears and desires. Without these things, we would be emotionless drones. Understanding your dreams helps you to better understand yourself and how to be happy in life.
